WinMax replaces and installs custom shape windows in Calgary and surrounding areas. Fixed architectural windows can fit openings such as arches, half-rounds, circles, triangles and trapezoids. Every insulated glass unit includes Low-E glass and argon gas; the coating varies with the selected glass package.
Custom windows fit openings that a standard rectangle cannot match. Shapes include arches, half-rounds, circles, triangles, trapezoids and gable windows, as well as transom-style and fixed picture designs. They are often used in staircases, vaulted rooms, gable walls and entry areas.
Most custom shape windows are fixed: they bring in light but do not open. Where the room needs fresh air, they can be combined with casement or awning windows.
When Does Your Home Need a Custom Shape Window?
A custom shape window is useful when the opening or the house design calls for something other than a standard rectangle. Fixed designs have no operating sash, which helps with sealing. Nearby casement or awning windows can provide ventilation.

Custom Window Replacement Calgary
A replacement can follow the shape of an existing specialty window or suit a new architectural feature. The aim is to fit the opening and the proportions of the house.
They are especially useful for rooms and exterior walls that need more shape, balance, and natural light. In addition, custom shape windows can help improve the look of vaulted spaces, staircases, high walls, and gable ends where standard window styles may look unfinished.
If an older specialty window has drafts, fog between the panes or worn seals, we can assess the opening and discuss a replacement that keeps the shape you want.
Why Choose Custom Shape Windows?
Choose the shape to suit the space around it. A window above a doorway, beneath a roofline or beside a staircase should relate to the lines of the house.
Custom shape windows can help improve:
- Curb appeal
- Natural light
- Home character
- Interior design
- Exterior balance
- Room brightness
- Architectural style
- Home value
A custom shape can be the main feature of a wall. Its size and position matter as much as the shape itself, especially when viewed alongside the other windows.
Custom Window Shapes
Available shapes and sizes depend on the window system, glass package and application. We check those limits before recommending a design for your opening.
Common custom window shapes include:
- Arched windows
- Half-round windows
- Circle windows
- Triangle windows
- Trapezoid windows
- Gable windows
- Transom-style windows
- Fixed picture windows
- Specialty architectural shapes
Measurements need to account for the shape, frame depth, glass and surrounding wall. Interior trim and the exterior finish are part of the fit too.
Energy Efficiency and Calgary Weather Performance
A custom window still needs a close fit, suitable glass and careful sealing. The unusual shape makes accurate measurement and installation particularly important.
A fixed custom window has no moving sash or opening joint. This helps limit air leakage while providing light in an opening that a standard window would not fit.
For operating window performance in Calgary, Winmax often recommends casement windows and awning windows. These styles offer strong compression-style sealing, excellent ventilation, and proven long-term performance.
Combining a fixed shape with an opening window lets each part do a different job: the shaped section provides light and the operating section provides fresh air.

Fixed Custom Windows vs Operating Windows
Most custom shape windows do not open. Their fixed design has fewer moving parts and allows a sealed glass area in a shape that would be difficult to make operable.
When a room needs ventilation, Winmax can help you combine custom shape windows with operating window styles. For example, a custom arched window can be placed above casement windows, or a specialty shape can be used above a larger fixed or operating window combination.
Common combinations include:
- Fixed custom shape window above casement windows
- Arched window above operating side windows
- Picture window with casement windows on both sides
- Specialty shape window above an entry area
- Custom gable window for high-wall spaces
- Custom transom-style window above a larger opening
These combinations let you keep the architectural shape while adding an opening section where the room needs ventilation.
Designed to Match Your Home
Check the shape and proportions against the rest of the house. The frame colour, grille pattern and surrounding trim should look consistent with nearby windows.
We can compare the available systems and finishes for your opening, including how the frame and trim will look from both sides.
Whether you are replacing an old specialty window or adding a new design feature, Winmax can help create a custom window solution selected for your Calgary home.
Best Places to Use Custom Shape Windows
Custom shape windows work best in places where standard windows do not fully match the architecture of the home. In addition, they are useful where daylight, exterior balance, and architectural style matter more than ventilation from that specific window.
Common locations include:
- Front elevations
- Vaulted ceilings
- Staircases
- Gable walls
- Living rooms
- Dining areas
- Entry areas
- Feature walls
- High-wall openings
They are especially useful when the goal is to improve daylight, exterior balance, and architectural style. As a result, custom shape windows can be one of the most visually noticeable window upgrades on a home.
Are Triple Pane Custom Windows Worth It in Calgary?
Triple-pane glass is worth comparing for large custom windows, cold rooms or exposed walls. The shape and size of the opening also affect which packages are available.
Because many custom shape windows are fixed, they can already support strong sealing. Therefore, pairing a fixed custom window with triple pane glass may help improve comfort, insulation, and cold-weather performance.
We can compare double-pane and triple-pane packages for the proposed shape and dimensions, along with the price and the room’s exposure.
