Understanding Window Energy Ratings
Calgary’s climate demands windows that perform in −30°C winters and intense summer sun. These are the certified performance numbers behind every Winmax window.
U-Factor
Measures heat loss through the window in W/(m²·K). Lower is better. Winmax triple-pane units reach as low as 0.75.
Energy Rating (ER)
A CSA standard combining solar gain, air leakage and insulation into one number. Higher is better — Winmax windows reach ER 50.
NRCan Certification
Every model below is independently tested and certified by Natural Resources Canada. The NRCan number confirms rated performance.
Frame Profiles
The 3-1/4″ frame suits tight retrofit openings; the deeper 4-9/16″ frame delivers better insulation.

What is U-Factor in windows? +
U-Factor measures how well a window prevents heat from escaping,
expressed in W/(m²·K). A lower U-Factor means better insulation. For Calgary’s
cold winters, a U-Factor under 1.0 is recommended. Winmax triple-pane windows
reach as low as 0.75.
What Energy Rating (ER) should I look for in Calgary? +
For Calgary, ENERGY STAR® Canada requires a minimum ER of 34 for
most window types. For optimal performance and rebate eligibility, we recommend
windows rated ER 40 or higher. Winmax triple-pane windows reach ER 50.
What does NRCan certified mean? +
Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) certifies windows that meet
ENERGY STAR® performance requirements for Canada’s climate zones. The NRCan
reference number confirms the window’s independently tested U-Factor and Energy
Rating values.
What is the difference between 3-1/4″ and 4-9/16″ frames? +
The 3-1/4″ frame is a slimmer profile suited for replacement
windows where space is limited. The 4-9/16″ frame is a deeper, more thermally
efficient profile that accommodates thicker triple-pane glass and delivers
better insulation for Calgary homes.
What do the glass codes like “180/Clear/180” mean? +
These codes describe the glass package. “180” and “LowE180ESC”
refer to Low-E (low-emissivity) coatings. “I89” is a high-performance Low-E coating.
“272” / “LowE272” offers solar control. Triple combinations indicate a triple-pane
unit with multiple coated surfaces for maximum insulation.
